These results reveal that the 2-hydroxyethoxymethyl group placed on the purine ring of guanine in Acyclovir / Aciclovir causes a greater effect than that of the 9-methyl in purines and similar to or greater than that of the ribose moiety in guanosine. Susceptibility of VZV isolates to Acyclovir / Aciclovir was tested using a footstone reduction assay to determine the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) of Acyclovir / Aciclovir and the SI(50) (IC(50) of the patient isolate/IC(50) of the reference strain) to Acyclovir / Aciclovir.
